Kurt grew up in Ecuador as the child of Alliance missionaries and first attended Toccoa Falls Bible College. Shortly after graduating from Simpson College and getting married to Terasue, Kurt entered into licensed ministry in 1991. Over the first fifteen years of ministry, he fulfilled his ordination requirements and also graduated from Tozer Seminary. Kurt and Terasue have three children, all of whom are married, and three grandchildren. Kurt has been serving as the lead minister at HarvestDowntown in Colorado Springs for over 20 years and has authored a book on what he thinks a church community should be.
